Sydney Junction Hotel reviews

1 Star Review by Daniel Little

Food was terrible. Menu advertised a seafood platter with fresh oysters. We received a seafood platter of frozen then deep fried yuck with no oysters. When we questioned where the oysters were the staff informed us "we don't do oysters". The manager offered us fresh prawns to supplement then brought us a small bowl warm defrosted prawns. Other meals were poor at best. Pasta was oily and and calamari main was frozen then deep fried as well. Wouldn't recommend or go back.

Stopped in here for a cuppa whilst waiting for our train. Haven't been here in many years and absolutely love the renovations. Great atmosphere and we can't wait to go back to spend some more time and have a meal. I'm sure it will be excellent!

We went to the Sydney Junction Hotel (or SJs to the Newcastle locals) less than a month ago with our dogs on the off chance they may allow dogs outside. We were surprisingly informed that the venue was pet friendly throughout - beer garden, bar, TAB, Sports bar. To ensure we were doing the right thing, I asked other staff. We were advised that dogs were allowed throughout the venue by 3 staff members and 1 manager. Today, we went there for lunch and a few beers on a pleasant afternoon with our two dogs. Walking in, we were stared at by one of the bar staff. Awkwardly asking if dogs were allowed, we were advised that they were not unless service dogs. When I advised that we were assured by other staff they were allowed, he informed that we were incorrect and dogs were not permitted and that the other staff were incorrect and he was correct. If dogs arent allowed at the venue, thats fine. But the attitude of the barman in advising us was out of order. Very disappointing and a little bit embarrassing. Anyway, we went to another venue very close and spent $150 on lunch and beers.

A very modern and open downstairs bar, staff are friendly and a very popular spot especially on game night. However the hotel part upstairs was not at the same standard. We found bugs in the bathroom and got stuck downstairs as we were given only one key. The rooms and upper building are the old buildings design which explains the apparent lack of noise cancelling as the trains that rumble and honk close by all hours of the night, you would think that would be a necessity. I barely slept, but the beds were comfortable at least.

Staff are excellent, and really looked after us. Lovely room (for a hotel) with good sound proofing but lacking in some basic elements like cups, milk teaspoon in the room for a cuppa. Also a clearly signed check in desk would be good.
