4 Star Review by John Selby
Dear Board of the Eastern Suburbs Tennis Club Today, Good Friday, the website advertised all day long that there are 5 courts to play on this evening. The story changed between 7pm and 7.15pm. with a proviso that Good Friday may be different, probably as a result of all the banked-up phone calls about people wanting to play tennis. This is just one example of social tennis players being taken for a ride. A couple of weeks ago I booked in for three of the four sets one is entitled to for the price of $ 14.00. I was taken off the court for one of the three booked sets, so that I played 2 sets and paid for four. Why? Because some bright spark decided that private bookings were more lucrative, so that a court was given away with no notice to the players. Social tennis, according to the the website and as a long-standing deal for social tennis players, is offered on Friday from 5pm - 7pm. The other day, I found out on the grape-vine that this would no longer be the case. During a hot February session of over 30 degrees, the air conditioning was turned off in the bar - not because it was faulty - it was to save electricity. The club is covered by a tin roof! The club has been filled with a raft of knee-jerk management-decisions that are counter-productive to the members' interests and, very likely, to the clubs financial viability: Example: Turning off the air-conditioning may save a couple of dollars in electricity. However, nobody, be it members or guests, would want to consume a drink in a room temperature of over 30 degrees, which decimates the bar's revenue. The revenue from the rent of the tenant and from the social tennis players is the most consistent source of revenue for the club. This bed-rock income should not be jeopardized by shortsighted knee-jerk decisions that antagonize the social tennis and other members who are the owners of the club. I would appreciate your comments in relation to the decision-making process in our club. I feel that decisions, which affect the members to the considerable extent as I have outlined, should only be taken with the members' forceful input into such decisions. There are workable ways of implementing such a process. Nevertheless, happy Easter John Selby
